Mexican walking fish
Habitat
Tourists in Mexico City will see the Mexican walking fish's native
habitat--the waterways around the city. They are also native to the
freshwater lakes around the city, and the destruction and human
invasion of the lakes have put the fish on the endangered species list.
Diet
Beef heart, beef liver (only use meat that is low fat), live food (small fish such as guppies or mosquito fish).
Breeding
Male and female axolotols are difficult even when sexually mature,
which is about 12 months of age. The male shows a swelling around the cloace area (the
sexual opening), is more slender, has a longer tail and the head is narrower. The female
lays between 300 to 1000 eggs when she spawns in early spring. Eggs hatch in about two
weeks at a temperature of 14-18'C. Parents should be removed from the tank after spawning
and young raised on live food.
Life span
Axolotls usually live about 15 years .some are reported to have lived up to 25 years!
